Essay on Strategic Plan to Improve Attendance for the school district
Train school-based attendance improvement teams at the basic level to implement the strategies utilize and will prove to be effective by the Bell County School District. Begin introducing strategies found to be effective to schools through Vertical Team meetings. Develop a manual of techniques utilized at Bell County School; manual will be revised for use throughout school division beginning June 2004.
Through attendance audit site visits by Coordinator of Administrative Alternative Services provided information to Bell county schools on some of successful techniques utilized in the Pilot Intervention Program. Effective strategies including those used at pilot project shared with attendance clerks at in-service.??
Train all school-based staff, particularly teachers, on ways to keep students in school i.e. classroom management techniques, alternatives to suspension, diversity training, “sensitivity training towards youth living in poverty and other difficult family circumstances, improvement of school climate, training of bus drivers and actions that can be taken by teachers as the first source of intervention”
Begin disseminating information to various schools on methods for teacher’s ways to keep students in school. Classroom management training should be developed along with classroom teachers selected by Staff Development to present at Professional Development Institute in summer of 2004.
All schools will develop a plan each school year to effectively and efficiently carry out the procedures of the school division’s Attendance Policy and the State Attendance Law. This will include the process for collecting daily attendance information and the role that school based staff play in attendance. Additionally, this will include conducting Child Development Team meetings after the 5th unexcused absence and will include the general assessment of each student i.e. a review of any factors possibly contributing to the student’s attendance problem: academic difficulties, behavioral problems, family issues, etc......................
