Essay on The Use of Historical Documents with ELL Students
Any grade is a critical year of change in the way instruction is delivered, the rigor of the content of the curriculum, and complexity of what students should know and be able to do. The focus of reading instruction shifts from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." Students at any grade level are now expected to use their reading skills to learn about all other subjects. Students are expected to accomplish a good amount of independent reading in the content areas to prepare reports, study, become familiar with resources such as historical documents, publications, websites, other non-fiction works, as well as larger works of fiction and other genres such as poetry and plays .
They must begin to critically evaluate the quality and validity of the information found in print and from a variety of sources. A grade is also the first time many of the state's students find themselves in classes with 30-35 students, without the more individualized attention they received in the primary grades with class sizes of less than twenty. Their academic success will be dependent on their ability to read independently and well and apply what they have learned.
It is important that all students learn to read, write and speak English proficiently. Therefore, English Language Learners (ELL) must develop a proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in the English language consistent with the expectations for all students (Lucas, Henze, Donato, 50).
ELL students must be held to the same high expectations of learning established for all students, from kindergarten through grade 12. It is extremely valuable for students to become bilingual/biliterate by retaining and further developing fluency....................
