Essay on Science Curriculum in Low Income Preschools
Preschool has become a norm for middle and upper class children. Advances in research on how the brain develops, as well as how early experiences shape a person's entire life, continue to reinforce the idea that preschool raises success levels for children as they enter kindergarten but this is also true that not every child has the opportunity to attend a quality preschool. That would take money, transportation and trained teachers. According to state birth records, Illinois is currently home to 360,000 3- and 4-year-olds and when conversations turn to providing preschool for all of those children, eyebrows raise among policymakers and legislators for a myriad of reasons, ranging from costs to ideological beliefs that young children ought to be at home with mom.
The main focus of the journal “Using Science as the Hub of an Integrated Early Childhood Curriculum: The Science Start Curriculum” is the science based early childhood curriculum. The major objectives of implementing the science curriculum is to promote the types of intellectual development that characterize the preschool years, including children’s expressive language, self-regulation of attention and problem-solving skills.
The main feature of this curriculum is that it is designed especially for low-income 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old children that attend either Head Start or New York State Universal Pre-K programs. The Science Start Curriculum originates from the context that the major development of children takes place when they are in preschool and from here only they should start building in confidence, academic skills and that the preschool years are appropriately devoted to activities that provide opportunities to learn about the surrounding world and to acquire and practice the cognitive skills.
