Placing leadership development and renewal at the forefront of school change. School cultures need to be developed whereby teachers and administrators discuss and evaluate new trends in education. What is being done presently in teaching and learning also needs to be assessed in terms of quality criteria. With an appropriate school culture, an improved curriculum should result. Pupils might then achieve more optimally. School cultures need to emphasize respect and acceptance of others. Recognizing talents and abilities of school personnel and pupils assists in meeting esteem needs. Having had esteem needs met, educators might then be motivated to achieve, grow, and develop toward a higher level of attainment.
Much is written about the culture of a school in terms of maintenance as well as change. Cultures tend to be stable and yet subject to change. When technology changes rapidly, culture tends to change more quickly. The latest in home appliances, automobiles, houses, and technology, among other items, has made for rapid changes in values, ideals, goals, and culture in general. Standards should be used by educators in changing the culture of the school. Each standard is carefully chosen by those involved in decision making in the school curriculum. Continuous changes from what is to what should be must be stressed in school culture. By working together, having a carefully chosen mission to achieve, focusing on students achieving worthwhile objectives of instruction, being creature in solving problems, creating networks to secure information, and helping students attain worthwhile objectives represent an ideal culture. From the actual to the ideal is a continuous venture in curriculum development.
