Essay on The Future of Education and Technology
Like many other sectors, advances in technology are driving some pretty fundamental changes in education. By 2024, we will have started to see the results of this transformation. Education will be available 24 x 7 and will be "learner-centric," rather than instructor-biased. Rather than being viewed as a separate event, learning will be integrated into our everyday lives with the current one-size-fits-all model replaced by "my education, my way."
I see learning becoming much more flexible and personalized. To date, education has primarily been self-paced or delivered either face to face in a classroom environment. As each method has its own advantages and disadvantages, blended solutions will be the norm, not the exception. I think we would all agree that learning never ends; why should instruction end? As we separate out the collaboration from the underlying content, learners will be able to continue their education through emails, chats, discussion groups, tutorials, etc. once the formal instruction has ended.
Similar to the way many schools use the same textbooks, learning objects will become standardized, enabling high-quality multimedia content to be easily distributed. Rating systems will winnow out the bad, and instructors will become more comfortable in their role of knowledge navigators, focused on sharing their experiences and interpretations of the content. Static, rigid courses will be replaced with learning paths, continuous, life-long processes of not only acquiring knowledge on a specific topic but also options to keep up to date on changes.
I think wireless technology will become very prevalent, and students will most likely carry electronic notebooks they can write on or type in. The writing will convert to a text document, making it easy for students to take notes in class that can later be manipulated on the computer.......
