Essay on History of Gender and Ethnic Diversity in Mathematics
Advances in technology represent a challenge to the American economy and to our educational system as it adapts to training a modern work force. Current studies indicate that in school and in the workplace, sex bias inhibits girls and women from reaching their full potential in mathematics, science and technology. The myth that these disciplines are male domains began many centuries ago and persists into modern times. In an increasingly complex and mechanized society, all citizens, including girls and women, require literacy in mathematics, science and technology.
Schools can help negate the myth and meet the challenge by fostering teacher and student awareness of equity issues; creating a climate in which both females and males learn mathematical, scientific and technical skills effectively; allocating adequate teaching time to the skill areas in which each gender has the most difficulty; and by providing concrete examples of the usefulness of these skills in future career choices (Newell, 1985). The purpose of this report card is to highlight recent research findings related to sex bias and discrimination in mathematics, science and technology. Wherever possible, these findings include data for females and males by race and ethnic group. Although data clearly show the under representation and underachievement of most minority groups in mathematics, science and technology preparation end careers, this report card will highlight discrepancies based on gender. Specifically, it discusses important linkages between early learning experiences and future achievement; societal stereotyping in mathematics, science and technology and barriers to learning; and the possible cost for women who are unskilled in these areas (Newell, 1985).
As the United States moves toward the next century, schools and classrooms become more culturally and ethnically diverse. Science teachers, supervisors and science education leaders face the challenge of designing implementing strategies that will work in a multicultural society.....
