Essay on Russian History
Not many nations have as multihued and dramatic a narration as Russia. At times tattered between the East and the West, from time to time buffering the two, Russia has at all times been a pot of vast racial multiplicity, which refuses to thaw out. In the 14th and 15th centuries a influential Russian state began to nurture around Moscow. It steadily stretched west and southwest toward the Dnieper River, north to the Arctic Ocean, and east to the Ural Mountains. By the 18th century Russia had gained complete direct over a number of main rivers, giving it admittance to the Baltic and Black seas. These conquests had an enormous impact on the country’s deal and monetary progress. The Russian Empire sustained to develop. At its utmost level, in 1914 before World War I (1914-1918), the empire incorporated more than 20 million sq km (8 million sq mi), almost one-sixth of the land area of the Earth.
Conventionally the royally government had been comparatively liberal of non-Russian cultures, languages, and religions. Much of the empire’s upper crust was of non-Russian origin, spoke French by choice, and was not Orthodox in religion. In the second half of the 19th century, and in particular under Alexander III, the regime began emphasizing its Russianness. Escalating constraints were placed on non-Russian languages and cultures. Schools began teaching wholly in Russian; administrative bodies could use only Russian, and publication in some languages was outlawed. To a degree these limitations followed trends obvious elsewhere in Europe.
The policy of Russification was also a response to fears that the multiethnic empire would disintegrate unless its population was drawn more closely together in culture and language. Whatever its motives, however, the policy of Russification caused great indignation among many non-Russians. The Jews were treated more than ever inadequately: They were forced to live in certain areas, were not permitted to enter specific professions, and sometimes fell victim to murderous attacks by local Slavic mobs......
