Treaty of Versailles is the peace agreement signed at the end of World War I flanked by Germany and the Allies. It was negotiated all through the Paris Peace Conference held in Versailles opening January 18, 1919. Represented were the United States, Great Britain, France, and Italy; the German Republic, which had replaced the imperial German government at the end of the war, was excluded from the conference. Incorporated in the initial section of the treaty was the Covenant of the League of Nations, the world's primary international relations body, which was given the accountability for executing the terms of the various treaties, negotiated after World War I. The treaty was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles near Paris.

Even though the United States never ratified the Treaty of Versailles, as an alternative negotiating a separate peace with Germany, the signing ritual described in this Los Angeles Times article of June 29, 1919, emblematically ended World War I. After defeating Germany in World War I, the victorious parties found it difficult to agree on the price Germany should pay in war reparations.Privileged persons mainly the leaders from the United States, Britain, France, and Italy met at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 and drafted the Treaty of Versailles.

The pact mandated a number of restrictive and compensatory measures for Germany, as well as gigantic demilitarization and financial reparations. Representatives at the conference included, left to right, British Prime Minister Lloyd George, Italian foreign minister Giorgio Sonnino, French premier Georges Clemenceau, and U.S. president Woodrow Wilson. By the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was required to put an end to indispensable military service; to reduce its army to 100,000; to demilitarize all the territory on the left bank of the Rhine River......
