Trouble had been brewing for years flanked by Britain and its American Colonies. However the Boston Tea Party of 1773 set off a chain of proceedings that led to the American rebellion. On a shady December night in 1773, men disguised as Indians boarded three ships anchored in Boston Harbor. Stored in the ships' holds were 340 chests of tea belonging to the British East India Company. In three hours, the men dumped all the tea overboard.

Trouble had been growing between Britain and its American Colonies since the 1760s. Britain had imposed taxes on the Colonies. A lot of Americans responded with the cry "no taxation without representation!" Then, in 1770, Britain removed the taxes--except for the one on tea. Many colonists got around that tax by drinking smuggled Dutch tea. A period of calm and prosperity set in. The Boston Tea Party shattered the calm. Relations between Britain and the Colonies grew steadily worse. By 1775, they were at war. Boston Tea Party (December 16, 1773) an organized refusal by Boston merchants to accept a shipment of tea, in protest against tea taxes retained after the British Parliament's repeal of the Townsend Acts . (Sutton, Roger) Patriots known as Sons of Liberty , led by Samuel Adams , Paul Revere , and others, dressed as Mohawks, boarded several British East India Company vessels and dumped 300 chests of tea into Boston Harbor.

Protest by a group of Massachusetts colonists, disguised as Mohawks and led by Samuel Adams, against the Tea Act and, more generally, against “taxation without representation”. The Tea Act (1773), passed by the British Parliament, withdrew duty on tea exported to the colonies. It enabled the East India Company to sell tea directly to the colonies without first going to Britain and resulted in colonial merchants being undersold......
