Essay on Civil War
Though we are proud of our continuous march along the path of civilization, we have not done anything to put a stop to war. On the contrary, we are constantly on the look out to find out new means, not for the good of mankind but for the destruction of human beings in war. War, indeed, is blight to our civilization. As long as men are engaged in this shabby and bloody affair, they take pleasure in inflicting untold pains and miseries on their fellow beings and killing them in cold blood and like flies. War is always cruel as it teaches to fly at each other’s throats. Civil war was one of the most important events of American history but still historians and researchers have not found the exact causes of Civil war.
According to Ahlstrome, “It is a fact that when the armies for the North and South were first formed, only a small minority of the soldiers on either side would have declared that the reason they joined the army was to fight either "for" or "against" slavery. However, equally true is the statement: Had there been no slavery, there would have been no war. Had there been no moral condemnation of slavery, there would have been no war." (Ahlstrome, 1972; p.649)
Slavery had been started by European’s African Slave Trade in fourteenth century by kidnapping people from all over Africa and selling them to rich merchants of civilized countries. Europeans justified this trade by saying that they actually tried to provide the opportunity to Africans to become Christians.
This slave trade became a holy cause in seventeenth century, which was fully supported by the Christian church. Europeans used their African slaves to replace the local population of their colonies. It has been estimated that in sixteenth century and onwards more than 10,000 slaves per year were brought from Africa to other European colonies.......
