Abraham Lincoln (1805-1865), the sixteenth President of the United States, came into command during the most crucial period of the country. This is because there was a civil war threat present and the Union was breaking up as well. He entered office with the support of voter, extremely small in number. This decade was particularly known as the ‘decade of weak Presidential Leadership.As a government administrator, Lincoln had no practical experience and was therefore not familiar with executive functions. He removed the nation from the clutches of slavery because he rallied North by sustaining a prolonged conflict. Many historians consider Lincoln to be the America’s greatest Presidents due to his extra ordinary qualities of ideas and actions, which were basically recognized after his death.

During his rule, Lincoln faced a lot of criticism, in the country and abroad as well. In issues related to war, he possessed more Presidential authority than any of the previous presidents. Consequently, some abused him of bypassing congress and suppressing constitutional liberties. In military matters, Lincoln was extremely careful, and so many people accused him for not giving proper direction to the congress and his cabinet. Others said that he was too slow on the issue of slavery. Lincoln was a complex man, with a unique combination of contrasting qualities.

He was humble, yet confident in his superior qualities. He was compassionate, yet firm. He even had this streak of sense of humour in him. Above all he was intelligent, infinitely patient and determined.
