Essay on Can Physical Activity Improve the Mental Health of Older Adults?
Authors evaluate impact of physical activity on physical and mental health of old-age people. Authors hypothesize that as population of old age is increasing with very fast pace and is the main cause of physical and mental illness in aged people, any approach which will enhance their physical health will definitely improve mental health. Physical activity has been widely supported having positive effects in delaying physical and mental illness.
Methods:
This study is based on review of previous research to support their hypothesis. Authors study in detail previous findings and research on the effects of physical activity in somatic diseases and mental diseases. Finding from previous researches were analyzed to elaborate how physically active men and women are protected from various illness that mostly strike people in their old age.
Summary of the findings
Authors reviewed recent researches on improving mental health and physical health in old age people. Various studies have shown that physically active men and women have decreased susceptibility to different kinds of diseases. Vast number of studies have elaborated that physically active men and women are less prone to cardiovascular diseases and abnormalities of psychological functions.Aging though is the cause of numerous diseases of the body and brain but with regular physical exercise its effects can be counterbalanced or at least reduced to delay the destruction process to some extent. Most people tend to be less active as they getter old. Even physically active men and women reduce their exercising program once they get old. But this has a negative effect on their health. Constant physical health not only improves physical health but also mental functioning while reduce dementia or depression.
