Essay on Surviving Bullies as a Child
Bullies are not all that uncommon and many adults have painful memories of being bullied by others or even being bullies. Bullying others can be great fun for the bully until they find their match. Being a bully is not something that is peculiar to the boys only. Girls can also be bullies and can behave in the most aggressive manner towards others of their own sex or even the boys. Name calling, hitting out at others who are weaker and cannot respond or overcome, tripping other kids in the hallways, vandalizing other kids property, abusing, doing things that hurt and inflicting physical pain are some of the favorite activities that bullies like to indulge in with passion against their weaker victims.
Such activities may be considered to be a normal part of children growing up. However, the consequences can be deadly serious. Victims of relentless bullying have been known to have committed suicide and bullying can have serious consequences in other ways like affecting the normal intellectual or emotional growth of others. Hence, bullying is something that needs to be taken seriously by parents, teachers and adults at large before its destructive impact has a significantly damaging impact on those who are being bullied (Estroff Marano, 1995).
Bullying is to be found in every culture. There is, however, a greater tolerance of bullying in cultures with a violent streak which tolerates violence being depicted in the movies and the popular media. The American culture with heroes like Schwarzenegger and the robot man tearing a tank in two, as well as other cultures in which wars and war heroes are very much appreciated has a tolerance of bullying. Even school personnel and adults in the streets may not take notice of bullying, considering the phenomenon to be a passing fad and a normal part of childhood.......
