Essay on Human Population Growth
What is the human population doing to the biodiversity on this planet?
We are dependent on fundamental biological processes for our health, sustenance and well being. Humans derive many benefits from the biodiversity that flourishes on this planet, ranging from food to many medicines and industrial products. Biotic resources also serve for recreation, tourism, and a quality of life that is intrinsically valuable but difficult to quantify.The main threat to the biodiversity is unsustainable development. Urban development and resource-based industries, such as mining and forestry are destroying or reducing natural habitat.
Many of the threats to biodiversity stem from a growing human population on earth: There are 6 billion humans on this planet today, and that number may reach 9 to 12 billion in the next 50 to 100 years. In addition, humans are using more energy, land, water and natural resources (like trees, fossil fuels, minerals, plants and animals) than ever before.
2) What is the human population doing to the available resources, such as air, freshwater, fossil fuels?
Many of us have grown up learning and being told that 6 billion is too much and this "over population" is primarily impacting the planet's ability to cope.Human action has transformed between one-third and one-half of the entire land surface of the earth. We have lost more than one-quarter of the planet's birds, and two-thirds of the major marine fisheries are fully exploited, over-exploited or depleted.....
