Child Development is defined as physical, intellectual, social, and emotional changes that occur from birth to adolescence (Ross A. Thompson). Children development occurs differently from child to child but some developments in behavior and thought are very similar in all children. There are four stages of child’s development infancy, toddler hood, preschool and primary grades.
Infancy is defined as a period from birth to about 2 years of age when personality, social attachments, thinking, and language first take shapes (Ross A. Thompson). William J. Meyer remarks that this first stage of life is an important time, characterized by physical and emotional growth and development. The child grows faster in this stage than at any later time. His physical size increases, body proportion changes, develops sensory discrimination and shows significant improvement in motor coordination.
Within this period of time infants form strong emotional attachment to their parents especially the mother (or other caregivers). Hence, Attachment provides a secure emotional base from which mature relationships develop (William J. Meyer). William J. Meyer also says that according to a Research, inadequate attachment impedes social and emotional development throughout life and Traumatic events such as physical abuse or malnutrition that occur during infancy affect development and behavior, usually in a negative way.
