Essay on Interracial Dating - Caucasians and African Americans
Interracial dating has always been a controversial issue. People may say they have no problem with it to sound as if are up with the times or politically correct. However, their behaviors may not reflect their attitudes. Could this possibly be because they have no problem with interracial dating and just do not choose to date out of their own race or could this be from the influence of their parents? If everybody who said they had no problem with interracial dating actually had no problem with it we would have more than less than 5% of interracial marriages in the United States. College students may have no problems dating outside their race. However, if their parents do not approve then the child is more likely to not date outside their race. Due to the parents dislike for interracial dating the child could develop a dislike for interracial dating.
Recent studies and surveys indicate that not only has the occurrence of interracial marriages involving Caucasians and African Americans progressively increased since the 1970s, but also the societal acceptance has become more common. Though there is no governmental law prohibiting biracial marriage, society has adopted various mores against the particular type of relationship, contributing towards the traditional and enduring disapproving attitude.
Sociologists classify marriages into two dominant types: heterogeneous and homogeneous. Heterogeneous is the union of two people from different racial backgrounds, whereas a homogeneous marriage is of people from the same ethnicity. Studies indicate that social characteristics play a dominant role in homogeneous marriages. These various factors include age, race, religion, ethnicity, education accomplishment, and personal interests such as entertainment, music, hobbies, and occupations. In theory, the alikeness in these various factors brings the persons together, creating the probability and groundwork for a marriage. The extent of this homogamy varies between relationships.....
