Other than the decisions individuals make on the personal level on their job, their leader has a major role to play to increase the motivation of the employees. Leaders body language, and the expression on his/her face, as a manager, supervisor, or leader, and the leaders value and appreciation of the employees work plays a significant role in motivating employees.There are two very different attitudes toward workforce motivation.

Theory X employees are inherently lazy and will avoid work if they can. Because of this workers need to be closely supervised and comprehensive systems of controls developed. A hierarchical structure is needed with narrow span of control at each level. According to this theory employees will show little ambition without an enticing incentive program and will avoid responsibility whenever they can. On the other hand Theory Y employees are ambitious, self-motivated, and anxious to accept greater responsibility, and exercise self-control and self-direction. It is believed that employees enjoy their mental and physical work activities. It is also believed that employees have the desire to be imaginative and creative in their jobs if they are given a chance. There is an opportunity for greater productivity by giving employees the freedom to be their best.

Feeling valued by their manager in the workplace is the key to high employee motivation and morale. Feeling valued ranks right up there for most people with liking the work, competitive pay, opportunities for training and advancement, and feeling "in" on the latest news. Building high employee motivation and morale is both challenging and yet supremely simple.
