Essay on Personal, Organizational, And Cultural Values
Personal, organizational, and cultural values play a great role in decision making in people’s personal and professional lives. The major traditional American beliefs in private property, competition and finding better ways of doing things have provided a climate for business growth and success for many years. In more recent times, increased emphasis has been put on human rights, especially the right of all people to a better life without discrimination because of sex, race, religion or age.
The four dominant organizational values of significance in my mode of business development and decision-making are:
- The belief, derived from the experience of the frontier, that opportunities of all kinds exist for those willing to work to take advantage of them;
- Faith in business and a high esteem for those in business;
- Belief in competition and competitiveness in all aspects of life, but particularly in business;
- Belief in the importance of change and in experimenting to find better ways of doing things.
These beliefs have been somewhat modified, as my business dealings have become more diverse and as social problems have forced more government intervention. They are supported by the real opportunities that exist in this country, and by the conviction brought by the American cultural belief (and hence my belief) that honest work is good and enjoyment of the fruits of labor is every man’s right. These are also supported by my personal beliefs, which support the limitations on the power of the government and guarantees of the rights of individuals.
My cultural beliefs echo a number of attitudes widely held by Americans. Among them are; respect for individuals regardless of their race, religion or creed; respect for authority arising from ownership of private property and elected or appointed political position; a strong regard for education; and a faith in logical processes, in science and in technology.....
