The image of motherhood is a caring, nurturing and above all loving one - but what happens when that image is shattered and the mother in question is an alcoholic who physically and mentally abuses her child? All too often, child abuse cases are just horrifying statistics protected by anonymity. Dave Pelzer (1999) was one such statistic who chose to write about his own experiences and how he used his wits to survive. A Child Called It (1999) is his story told through the eyes of a child.
The first part of a trilogy set in the early 1970s, it is based on his life from the ages of four to 12. From the outset, he describes the abuse he went on to endure throughout his childhood.
