Historically, a man's right to use physical force to correct his wife has been supported by legal, religious, cultural, political and economic structures of Western society. Roman law, and later English common-law, considered wives legally subordinate to husbands and control of wives the responsibility of husbands. Although women are no longer legally considered the property of their husbands, and men do not have the explicit right in law to beat their wives, many of the social structures in Western societies continue to implicitly condone wife beating and mitigate against women obtaining help .

There is, consequently, sufficient normative ambiguity about assaults on wives that a clear moral consensus does not exist. Furthermore, there is a diversity of individuals in society available for forming connections and, rather than reducing deviance, some may have the opposite effect if connections are strengthened in a peer group that endorses male dominance values.

Most nonconsensual sex takes place among people who know each other spouses, family members, courtship partners, or acquaintances. Sexual coercion can take place at any point in a woman's life. Children as young as several months old have been raped or otherwise sexually molested. Even in old age women are not immune: Rape crisis centers report victims in their seventies and older.

Much sexual coercion takes place against children or adolescents in both industrial and developing countries. Between one-third and two-thirds of known sexual assault victims are age 15 or younger, according to information from justice systems and rape crisis centers in Chile, Peru, Malaysia, Mexico, Panama, Papua New Guinea, and the US. During childhood young girls can become easy targets for older male relatives or friends who obtain sex through force or deception. Later, boyfriends, teachers, relatives, or other men in authority may force young women into unwanted sexual encounters......
