Essay on Are Children Victims of Domestic Violence More Likely to Become Batterers as Adults
This paper is on whether children victims of domestic violence more likely to become batterers as adults. The paper supports the claim that children who witness domestic violence exhibit a variety of emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and developmental problems. This is important information to share with battered adults who may believe that children are unaware of the violence and therefore not affected by the abuse. How an individual child will respond to exposure to domestic violence will be a function of many factors including whether or not he or she also was abused, his or her developmental stage, gender, coping style, and resources. Negative effects for children exposed to domestic violence can range from temporary emotional upset to chronic posttraumatic stress symptoms.
Many children who experience violence in the home show no perceptible psychological problems. Negative outcomes are not necessary sequelae for children who experience violence in the home. To the extent that a child has a caring relationship with an adult; a safe haven; and personal, family, and community resources, the negative effects of exposure to violence can be reduced. Children can benefit from learning about family roles and boundaries and knowing where to turn for help when there is a problem.
