Ecofeminism is first and foremost a practical movement for social change arising from the struggles of women to sustain themselves, their families, and their communities in the face of maldevelopment and environmental degradation. For the most part, those who set out to articulate the philosophy of this movement do so in the belief that such theorizing will assist the movement by increasing the self-consciousness of its participants and representing its beliefs to those who are open to considering the viability of its message.

As Irene Diamond and Gloria Orenstein note in their introduction to Reweaving the World: The Emergence of Ecofeminism, Ecofeminist politics does not stop short at the phase of dismantling the androcentric and anthropocentric biases of Western civilization, ecofeminism seeks to reweave new stories that acknowledge and value the biological and cultural diversity that sustains all life. These new stories honor, rather than fear, women's biological particularity while simultaneously affirming women as subjects and makers of history. This understanding that biological particularity need not be antithetical to historical agency is crucial to the transformation of feminism.

Transformation may very well be the single term to which all adherents of would assent. Starhawk, for example, defines the spiritual wing of ecofeminism as based on a goddess tradition, nature theology, indigenous spirituality, and immanence, adding that "ecofeminism challenges all relations of domination. Its goal is not just to change who wields power, but to transform the structure of power itself" (77). In order to accomplish such a task, activists need to realize that "environmental issues cannot be intelligently approached without the perspectives of women, the poor, and those who come from other parts of the globe, as well as those of all races and cultural backgrounds" (83). For Starhawk and many others, then, ecofeminism is based not only on the recognition of connections between the exploitation of nature and the oppression of women but also on the belief that these two forms of domination.......
