Anti-abortion extremists who encourage the harassment of clinic employees, and in some cases violence and murder against the doctors go under the microscope in this documentary produced for the premium cable network HBO. Interview subjects include Neal Horsley, who created the outlawed Internet site "The Nuremberg Files," which posted the names and home addresses of doctors believed to perform abortions; Paul Hill, who is currently serving time in a Florida prison after killing employees of an abortion clinic in Pensacola; and Bob Lokey, a self-described leader of this movement. Directors Marc Levin and Daphne Pinkerson also interview a number of pro-choice activists, who explain their struggle to protect a woman's right to a safe and legal abortion from the likes of Lokey and his followers.
It is widely believed that the two topics that cause the most tension among people is politics and religion. Maybe that's why abortion is such a hot issue. Solders in the Army of God is an HBO original documentary that takes a close look at the “Army of God” organization, the most violent anti-abortion group in the United States. The Army of God, are the people whose feelings about the immorality of abortion runs so deep that they're prepared to even happy to use violence to get their points across.For two decades, Army of God, an underground and largely Protestant network comprised of saboteurs, arsonists, and assassins have waged war against abortion providers. The film is essentially the national television debut for the aboveground spokesmen and spokeswomen of the Army of God.
In many ways the crucial figure in the story is Jonathan O'Toole, a 19-year-old who signs up for the movement. The film follows the mentoring relationship of long haul trucker and Army of God recruiter Bob Lokey, of Opp, Alabama, and Jonathan O'Toole of Kansas City, Mo., who says he is seeking the most "radical" and "terroristic" anti-abortion group he can find.....
