"Father" is an extremely reserved word in the present day. Most people use the word "dad" or "daddy", as an alternative. On Father's Day, children might take their dad out for a meal. They might send him a greeting card or call on the telephone. Or they might get him a present. Not all children, on the other hand, will see or speak with their dad on Father's Day. Studies articulate in relation to 24 percent of American children live in a family without a father. This is three times more than in 1960. Back then, just eight percent of children lived in a family without a father. One cause is the boost in children born to women who are not married.

Time and again the fathers of these children do not earn enough money to support their family. They may not have an adequate amount of education to get a good job. They may not know how to be a good parent. In some American communities, almost half the families do not have a father living at home. Children in these communities may grow up to believe that a father is not important. Nevertheless, experts agree that fathers are important for families. They say fathers provide emotional support that seems to help children develop better.

Absent fathers are those who, in the process of leaving the family, do not offer explanations to their children about the reasons for their departure. The other dominant attribute of this type of father is that he does not stay in contact with his children or, again, offers reasons for his continuing disconnection from them. The children thus abandoned feel their fathers are inexplicably, strangely, cryptically, or secretively absent. Contrast this to the father in military service, who tells his children that he is leaving to perform his duty......
