Essay on Asian - American Family Contrasts
Parenting is one of the most challenging and difficult responsibilities a person can face. The way a family is structured is called the parenting style. Parenting styles are collections of parental attitudes, practices, and non-verbal expressions that characterize the nature of parent-child relationships.Most Chinese fathers take their fathering roles and its responsibilities seriously. The majority of fathers saw the moral dimension of fathering in two similar perspectives. First, morality is connected with sacrifice, giving up something of their own for the sake of their child or children. Others related morality to duty, equating moral responsibility with financial responsibility to their offspring.
On the other hand American culture has seen the deterioration of the family unit, and a large number of American fathers no longer take responsibility for their families or children (Bronfenbrenner, 1996).In Chinese culture parents were, by tradition, the children's moral teachers, and childrearing was mainly the job of the mother.For generations, American culture regarded parenting as an ability inherent in the human species. This so-called “myth of instinctive parenting” has been dismantled by a multitude of experts in science, psychology, and education. Modern parents are constantly bombarded with conflicting advice on the nutritional, developmental, social, and physiological needs of children.
