Essay on Views of the Aging in the Media
The term "ageism" was coined in 1969 by Robert Butler, the first director of the National Institute on Aging. He likened it to other forms of bigotry such as racism and sexism, defining it as a process of systematic stereotyping and discrimination against people because they are old. Today, it is more broadly defined as any prejudice or discrimination against or in favor of an age group.Age discrimination is our main apprehension. All societies discriminate in opposition to people on basis of age. Ageism as well as stereotyping have an effect on attitudes, which consecutively affect the way decisions, is taken plus possessions assigned at family, society, national as well as international level.
Age discrimination: Unequal dealing or rejection of rights on basis of age by persons or associations. It can be perceived in procedures, thoughts and actions which amount to discrimination through intolerance, lack of knowledge, lack of consideration and stereotyping which disadvantage elderly people.The results of ageism are discrimination. This will have destructive outcomes on the people. For instance, an aged person who admits the pessimistic representation may ‘act old’ even if this possibly be beyond keeping with their character or preceding habits. This may signify that they discontinue or decrease social behavior, do not seek suitable medical dealing, or recognize poverty. In real meaning, this internalization of a pessimistic representation can result in the old person becoming intolerant in opposition to him/herself, ending up with loss of self-respect, self-hatred, disgrace, gloominess, and/or suicide in severe cases.
