Essay on Biblical Justice
We know from census data that 31 million Americans are in households that struggle to put food on the table. We know that it's possible to cut hunger in half for about a nickel per day per American. We're not asking for the moon when we ask to cut hunger in half, or when we ask to overcome poverty. Ronald J. Sider has been the mind and heart behind Evangelicals for Social Action (ESA) for thirty years. His scholarships and teaching, his life lived among the poor and lower middle class, have inspired and challenged Christians around the world to work for a just world as proclaim the Good News.
(Ron Sider) In 1977, Sider's Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger was published. Hailed by Christianity Today as one of the one hundred most influential books in religion in the twentieth century, it went on to sell 350,000 copies. He later authored Good News Good Works, a call to the church to embrace what Sider sees as the whole gospel, through a combination of evangelism, social engagement and spiritual formation. Its companion book tells stories about effective ministries that bring both evangelism and social transformation together. Completely Pro-Life, published in the mid-1980s, calls on Christians to take a consistent stand opposing abortion, capital punishment, nuclear weapons, hunger, and other conditions that Sider sees as anti-life. Ronald J. Sider writes, "Most of the poor want to earn their own way. They have enormous social capital: intact families, a desire to work, pride and integrity.
But they need some help."
