Domestic violence is a most important societal predicament and a widespread crime that crosses age, gender, ethnic, economic, educational, religious and social lines. It is usually understood as assaultive actions that more often than not involve adults who are in an intimate, sexual and cohabiting relationship. However, at the same time as it is crimes encompassing all domestic associations, a lot of prefer the term "family violence." Referred to as the "Cycle of Violence," domestic violence usually consists of repeated patterns of abusive behaviors. According to legal experts, domestic violence is the least reported crime in the United States.
Often, based upon cultural, religious or traditional beliefs, many victims feel their spouse or partner has the right to abuse them. They may believe they must live with violence as an accepted way of family life. Others feel shame and guilt. (McLeer, S.V., & Anwar, R.A.H. (1987)A lot of victims are unaware of the services and protection available to them. No one deserves to be abused, and the first step to resolving an abusive relationship is to recognize that such violence is unacceptable behavior. This responsibility ultimately rests, not with the victim, but with society. If we are complacent about domestic violence and if we consider it someone else's problem, then we are tolerating domestic violence and promoting the "code of silence." Isolation within the "code of silence" allows domestic violence to thrive.
The Department of Justice estimates that approximately 25 percent of domestic violence assaults are actually reported to the police.Individual surveys by and large create higher estimates of violence than representative records, however they are also assumed to undervalue the actual extent of domestic violence.
