The study of crime, society's response to it, and its prevention, including examination of the environmental, hereditary, or psychological causes of crime, modes of criminal investigation and conviction, and the efficacy of punishment or correction as compared with forms of treatment or rehabilitation. Although it is generally considered a subdivision of sociology, criminology also draws on the findings of psychology, economics, and other disciplines that investigate humans and their environment.

Criminology is defined as the interdisciplinary scientific study of crime, criminal behavior, and the institutional responses there to. The Criminology provides a scientific, philosophical, and humanistic approach to the understanding of these subjects in contemporary society. It includes the processes of making laws, breaking laws, and the reacting toward the breaking of laws. Together, these three processes form a unified sequence of events.

Criminologists have adopted methods of study from varying social and behavioral sciences. Like other scientists, criminologists measure and assess crime over time and place. They also measure the characteristics of criminals, crimes, and victims using various methods. Certain acts, regarded as undesirable by political society are defined as such. Society reacts by punishment, treatment, or prevention. These sequences of events come together to comprise the object matter of criminology.

Criminology is an advanced, theoretical field of study.  It can be defined as the study of crime, the causes of crime, the meaning of crime in terms of law, and community reaction to crime.  Not too long ago, criminology separated from its mother discipline, sociology, and although there are some historical continuities, it has since developed habits and methods of thinking about crime and criminal behavior that are uniquely its own.Theory is a multifarious subject in its own right.
