The September 11, 2001 attacks were a sequence of synchronized terrorist attacks upon the United States carried out on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. That morning, 19 men affiliated with al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners. One member of each team was a trained pilot. The pilots of two teams crashed two planes into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, one plane into each tower, which caused both towers to collapse within two hours. The pilot of the third team crashed a plane into the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia. Passengers and members of the flight crew on the fourth hijacked aircraft attempted to retake control of their plane from the hijackers; that plane crashed into a field in rural Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

Approximately 3,000 people died in these attacks. Memorials to the victims and heroes of the attacks of September 11 have been planned. An eternal flame was lit by the Mayor on the first anniversary of the disaster. An outdoor public memorial at the Pentagon has been designed by Keith Kaseman and Julie Beckman of KBAS in New York City. Construction of the memorial is scheduled for completion in Fall 2006. Within the Pentagon itself, the America's Heroes Memorial was added in September, 2002 when the building repairs were completed. However, public access to this memorial is restricted to group tours.

Women were part of September 11 in a lot of ways. The news media has for the most part focused in the year after 9/11 on women as bereaved family members. But women were September 11 victims and heroes in many ways. They died on the planes and in the offices -- they also died in rescue attempts. And women in Afghanistan have been disproportionate victims, of a "war against women" before 9/11, and as civilian "collateral damage" and refugees after......
