In his 1991 book "Leadership for the Twenty-First Century," Joseph C. Rost notes Bass' and Stodgill's efforts to develop a leadership manual. These scholars collected more than 4,700 leadership studies, however did not present a single unified definition of leadership. In his own studies, Rost observed that it wasn't until the turn of the 19th century that any effort was made in good dictionaries to define the term leadership.
