The names of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony are the most well known names which have been associated with women’s rights since the 1800s. Women’s rights meant much more then the right to vote for women in the United States of America. Included with the right to vote for women were other rights such as abolition, educational reforms for all classes of people, temperance, women’s property rights and labor reform. The two had met while campaigning for abolition, temperance and women’s suffrage at the First Women’s Rights Convention in 1848 (Donna Elks).

The women were both from Quaker families and the first meeting between them took place on the street while walking to attend the First Women’s Rights Convention at Seneca Falls, NY. The liking for each other was instant and this first meeting was the beginning of a lifelong friendship and a working partnership that was to secure numerous personal freedoms for many in the United States society (Ellen).Susan B. Anthony was born in 1820 in Adams, Massachusetts in a Quaker family with long activist traditions. She was a teacher for fifteen years and an activist for temperance but because she was a woman, she could not speak publicly at the rallies. Perhaps it was this that caused her to devote herself to the fight for women’s right to vote.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton was born in Johnston, NY in 1915 to a prominent and well-respected Quaker family whose only son had died. She did everything within her power to make her father proud of her. Her father was indeed proud of her but sometimes remembered his son and said “I wish you were a boy.” Perhaps this remark was also the result of the condition of women in the American society and their lack of rights. She married Henry Stanton in 1840 and attended the anti-slavery convention......
