Essay on Key Issues in Age Discrimination
One of the most common excuses for failure to mitigate in business cases is "There’s no point looking for a new job – I’m too old." This attitude, often held by people as young as in their 40s, is both distressing to hear and demeaning to utter. Current legislation prohibits discrimination on grounds of race, sex, marriage, disability, religion (in Northern Ireland) but not age. It is unfair to individuals, who should be judged on merit, not matters over which they lack control (such as race, sex or age). It can likewise damage companies as the result of loss of corporate memory: for example, many computer programmers from the 1960s are now being re-employed to handle the millennium bug.
The purpose of this paper is to look at the various issues of age discrimination. It is so because age discrimination is one of the worst types of discriminations next to that of racial or ethnic discrimination. A person s age should never be a factor in how they are treated. Once we reach the age where we can make logical conscious decisions on our own, we should be treated like everybody else. Age discrimination is predominant because the majority of this world’s inhabitants have unfair and old-fashion ideas or beliefs with respect to two age groups in particular.
Age discrimination in business is a complex issue which impacts on many areas of Government policy and can have many implications for individuals themselves. Age discrimination can occur across the whole spectrum of business and can affect both young and older people. It can affect a person’s chances of getting a job, as well as their chances of promotion or development when in work.
