The events of September 11, 2001 have led the American public to rightfully question the ability of security and intelligence agencies to safeguard the nation.
Michelle Malkin presents a sobering expose of the pre-existent and persistent security problems that plague the agencies charged with protecting America's borders, airports and seaports. She analyzes the operations of inert and unduly politically influenced agencies whose track record does not generate confidence in their future success. She identifies from the onset her personal ideological position and its roots on the subject of immigration. Mostly being sick of pro-immigrant lobbying efforts by ethnic groups, and bureaucratic incompetence that she believes have led to major national security problems. According to her tone in the book it is clear that she belives "Immigration must be treated as a national security issue."
Malkin identifies the major entities that lobby the Congress and pressure the executive branch for lax visa, immigration and inspection systems. Travel agency associations and chambers of commerce are but two salient examples of American associations and businesses that lobby for expedited entry into the country, which often leads to the creation of security gaps. She accuses them of protecting their self-interest at the expense of national security. Malkin points out, both legal and illegal immigrants have brought terror to American soil. If the guardians of America's golden door can separate honest, hardworking applicants from troublemakers, the U.S. would be a better place to live. Unfortunately, the process is not always easy.
She singles out universities and other academic entities, which she labels "academic pimps." Even though all academic entities are painted with a broad stroke, ample evidence is supplied of lobbying efforts and pseudo protestations of loyalty by international student organizations that continue to oppose national security measures that affect their constituencies.
