Essay on Mozart: His Music

Introduction

W. A. Mozart, 1790 portrait by Johann Georg Edlinger Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (January 27, 1756 - December 5, 1791) is among the most popular, significant and influential composers of European classical music. His music includes some of the acknowledged pinnacles of piano, chamber, and symphonic, religious and operatic music. Although Mozart was under appreciated during his lifetime, later composers have admired him and many of his works have become part of the standard concert repertoire.

He showed musical gifts at a very early age, composing when he was five and when he was six playing before the Bavarian elector and the Austrian empress. Leopold felt that it was proper, and might also be profitable, to exhibit his children's God-given genius (Maria Anna, 'Nannerl', 1751-1829, was a gifted keyboard player): so in mid-1763 the family set out on a tour that took them to Paris and London, visiting numerous courts en route. Mozart astonished his audiences with his precocious skills; he played to the French and English royal families, had his first music published and wrote his earliest symphonies. The family arrived home late in 1766; nine months later they were off again, to Vienna, where hopes of having an opera by Mozart performed were frustrated by intrigues. (Stanley Sadie)

His Music

Mozart was a creative composer and wrote in many genres. Among his best works are his operas, piano concertos, symphonies, string quartets, and string quintets. Although most of these genres existed before, the piano concerto was almost single-handedly developed and popularized by Mozart. Mozart also wrote a great deal of music for solo piano, chamber music, and religious music including masses. He also composed many dances, divertimenti, and other forms of light entertainment.
