Homer is the name conventionally assigned to the writer of the Iliad an epic of Greek ancient times. Nothing is recognized of Homer as an individual, moreover in fact it is an issue of argument whether a single person can be said to have written the Iliad. Linguistic and chronological indication, nevertheless, suggests that the poems were composed in the Greek settlements on the west coast of Asia Minor sometime in the 8th century BC.
The epic deals with renowned proceedings that were alleged to have occurred several centuries before their composition. The Iliad is set in the final year of the Trojan War, fought amid the Greeks and the population of the city of Troy. The renowned clash forms the milieu for the fundamental intrigue of the story: the rage of the Greek hero Achilles.
Offended by his leader in chief, Agamemnon, the young soldier Achilles withdraws from the war, leaving his member Greeks to go through dreadful defeats at the hands of the Trojans. Achilles discards the Greeks' attempts at understanding although at last relent to some level, allowing his companion Patroclus to lead his troops in his place. Patroclus is slain, and Achilles, crammed with rage and repentance, turns his anger against the Trojans, whose leader, Hector (son of King Priam), he kills in single battle. The poem closes as Achilles surrenders the dead body of Hector to Priam for funeral, recognizing a definite relationship with the Trojan king as they both face the tragedies of humanity and grief.
