The world has seen an explosion in the field of communications during the past 2 decades. With advent of ever advancing computer technology, cable television, satellite communication and universal access to data within the reach of a fingertip the demand for information continues to increase and the media continue to grow at a very rapid rate. This boost in the growth of the media has created numerous opportunities for women. It has allowed the women to participate in communications and mass media and to play a pivotal role in the dissemination of information. But unfortunately this advancement has not worked in the favor for women. Communication networks globally have been used to portray demeaning and stereotyped images of women to sell products and services to consumers.
There is an immense potential for human development in the ever growing sector of information and communication technology, but everyone does not have access to the resulting benefits. This "digital divide", as it is called, is present not only between the richer and poorer countries but also between the richer and poorer people inside within those countries. Women make up nearly two thirds of the world's non-literates which show that non-literacy is an obstacle to Internet access. With the exception of USA where a staggering 50% or more of the Internet usage comes from women, the ratio of men and women on the internet in other countries is very contrasting. For example the percentage of women using Internet is 19% in South Africa, 13% in the Netherlands and 8 % in China. Few women work in technological fields and the percentage of women receiving technical training is very small (UN 9).
According to the 2000 Women and Minorities Survey conducted in the USA by the Radio-Television News Directors Association and Foundation only 24% of television news directors and 20% of radio news directors are women. A shortage of women is present on the other side of the microphone that is the audience. According to a study by the White House women accounted for only 11% of all guest appearances in talk shows in 1999 and 2000.
