The legaislation or religious law is commonly used by government to prohibit and control the the perceived negative impact of recreational drug use in a society or more generally in the nation. Therefore, President Richard Nixon initiated in 1971 the American War on Drugs in order to stop usage of drugs. The current drug prohibition in the U.S. is a consequence of this government action.
The American War on Drugs is an actively debated topic. Non-medical drug prohibition is a ontroversial issue. The nation seems to be extremely polarized on the extent and intesity of usage of drugs. Many arguments have been presented and as a result severe consequences and conflicts of interest has risen.
The pro-drug group argue that the governments prohibition of drug violates an individual's right. Whether to change consciousness or not is strictly a personal choice that should be allowed to every citizen. Moreover, this group also feels that drug prohibition is an expensive and ineffective way of monitoring and controlling the usage of non-medical drugs and the negative consequences of such drugs.
On the other side of the continum, the proponents of drug prohibition argue on the biological and medical premise. The anti-probition group argues that psychoactive drug usage by individauls other than for medical reasons is harmful and poses a threat to other members of the society. They feel that the best way to stop individuals is by enacting a legal prohibition to all drug use. Moreover, many people present arguments from moral and dogmatic prespectives regarding usage of drugs that makes individual lose their logical train of thoughts.
