Essay on Simulated Disciplinary Hearing

When Willie Woods decided to take revenge at his place of work, he was very selective about who was to die--he targeted only those supervisors who he felt were responsible for his work performance difficulties. Woods believed he was about to lose his job and that four supervisors, in particular, were the real cause of his problems. He sought out each victim in a planned fashion, sparing the lives of other coworkers who happened to be in his path while ruthlessly murdering his predetermined victims.

The Crime

Willie Woods was an ex-marine who had a history of good to excellent performance for over ten years at Piper Tech before he began to experience difficulties at work. During the first decade of his employment, Woods had received a promotion and consistently satisfactory performance evaluations. Throughout this period, Woods was described by coworkers as soft-spoken and easygoing. By 1994, Woods had received regular salary increases and was earning $44,000 per year plus a strong benefit package. In that year, however, things began to go wrong for Willie Woods (Danforth, 1997).

Less than two years before the murders, Woods had purchased a home in Upland, San Bernardino County--an area that offered very comfortable homes in an upper-middle-class community. The home he purchased was impressive, with four bedrooms, a swimming pool, and a purchase price of $172,000. It was shortly after the purchase of this home that Woods's performance at work began to deteriorate for the first time since his employment a decade earlier (Culhane, 1998).

As Woods's quality and quantity of work slipped, he was subjected to several verbal warnings, two substandard performance evaluations, and at least one formal disciplinary session. With each discussion about his performance, Willie Woods became more angry and hostile. He argued openly with his supervisors and frequently threatened them. He would publicly tear up and discard counseling documents and even throw furniture during the meetings. Following each counseling session, Woods's performance would deteriorate further and he would become more aggressive and intimidating to those in his presence (Cummings, Rosenkjar & Barash, 1999).
