I suppose that Shakespeare had an explicit purpose in Hamlet's headstrong defiance of what is usually staged as a supportable authenticity: the letters and trinkets Ophelia holds in her hands. What separates Hamlet from further reprisal plays (and perhaps from every play written earlier than it) is that the stroke we expect to see, for the most part from Hamlet himself, is frequently deferred at the same time as Hamlet tries to get hold of more definite facts about what he is doing.
