Essay on The Dangers and Challenges of High Altitude Mountain Climbing

The pleasure and joy attached with climbing and reaching highest mountain ranges of the world cannot be explained in words. But similarly like every other thing that has advantages and disadvantages, mountain climbing also have many medical and physical dangers attached to it.

ACUTE MOUNTAIN SICKNESS (AMS)

Breathing is a major problem, faced by almost every second person who wish to travel above the sea level because as altitude increases, the number of oxygen molecules per breath gets reduced forcing body to adjust itself to having less oxygen. Besides this at high altitude with lower air pressure, the fluid present in the capillaries leak and enter both the lungs and the brain, which can result in fluid build-up.

AMS is very common and is faced by almost all the mountain climbers. It starts immediately after 12 to 24hours of arrival at elevation and the major indications include Headache, Dizziness, and Loss of hunger, Exhaustion, Shortness of breath and sleep disorder. The condition of the person suffering from AMS can get worse at night so it is recommended to immediately share your feelings of illness with other mountain climbers to avoid any serious consequences. Minor AMS can also occur at a height of 8,000 feet but the serious symptoms usually occur after 12,000 feet. It is also believed that AMS is not dependent on the height instead it depends on the speed of the mountains climbers.

That is why it is more common among young people who try to reach top of the mountain in great excitement. These young climbers also don't give enough time to their bodies for getting adjusted with certain internal body changes such as decrease in oxygen, production of more red blood cells to carry oxygen, production of a particular enzyme which releases oxygen from hemoglobin to the body tissues etc. The experts suggest that not more than 300-500 meters or 900-1500 feet should be climbed each day.
