It took America two centuries after Christopher Columbus discovered it in 1492, to adopt the language of its then European rulers. Until then the only literary forms that had been used by the Natives and later by the pilgrims was oral. With the common practice of story telling in large gathering, amongst the Natives, the Europeans inspiration driven promotion of the written form changed the context. Works by European colonists and explorers were introduced by the early eighteenth century.
In 1702 Magnalia Christi Americana by Cotton Mather, a religious writer, introduced one of the first of many religious writings that were to follow. Driven by the sentiments of the Puritans, Jonathan Edwards writings made a revival movement which led to the Great Awakening. Comprising of literary religious works these works were the proponents of religious values during The Great Awakening.
Leading to the American Revolution, political writings became active which propagated anti-British sentiments. This new type of literature, aptly called national literature, led by Thomas Paine's pamphlets and Benjamin Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanack brought some of the most original Prose, Poetry, Drama and Journalism.
