For some people, the image of arranged marriages is what first comes to mind when they hear the word courtship. This is a sure indication of how far our culture has regressed in its understanding of relationships. Unfortunately the twentieth century phenomenon of dating has so entrenched our thinking that we often see dating as the norm. This couldn't be further from the truth. Dating was a practice that only came into play after the introduction of the automobile. Until then, the cultural standard for young couples interested in marriage was courtship. Courtship can take a variety of forms but there are essential elements that need to be considered in establishing guidelines for a young couple.
A Midsummer Night's Dream, like Love's Labor's Lost, is derived from no single identifiable source and thus reveals with particular clarity the characteristics of early Shakespearean romantic comedy. The green world of this play is a wood near Athens, with fairies, a nocturnal atmosphere, farcical mix-ups and sudden alterations of affection caused by a magical drug, metamorphoses of men into beasts, and, above all, a sense of dreamlike unreality. The journey made by the lovers in their attempt to evade the "sharp Athenian law" is a transforming experience from which they eventually awaken as though from an improbable and even nightmarish dream.
They have been led through jealousies, mutual recriminations, and terror to reconciliation and a sense that their experience of passionate misunderstanding has been chimerical. Bottom, too, awakens as though from a dream, which he will set down in a ballad. Only Theseus and his courtly associates have been untouched by the poet's magic, and even Theseus sees that dreaming and love resemble the artist's imaginative vision, in which "airy nothing" is given "a local habitation and a name."
