Abstract
The discovery of the quantized nature of radiation by the German physicist Max Planck and the hesitant presentation of this discovery to the German Physical Society in 1900, laid the foundations for much future research in physics that is related to quantum theory and the nature of matter. Whereas the quantized nature of radiation and light is described by Planck's constant which describes a quantum of radiation, there are also questions that have been asked in regard to the origin of Planck's constant and how this relates to the more basic and fundamental processes in matter. In over a hundred years since the presentation of Max Planck's theory, much advancement in physics has taken place and several physicists have attempted to ponder on the origins of Planck's constant. This paper attempts to take a look at several points of view which have been presented in this regard and presents some findings and a conclusion about the origins of Planck's constant.
Introduction
It has been more then a hundred years since the 42 year old Max Planck, a German scientist who was investigating radiation emitted and absorbed in the form of electromagnetic waves presented his theory about this transfer of energy radiation to the German Physical Society, on the December 14, 1900. The theory that was presented is fundamental to Physics and describes the quantized and discrete nature of energy emitted and absorbed by resonators and black bodies which are emitters and absorbers of radiated energy. At that time, the presentation by Max Planck did not cause too much of a stir and was thought to be another abstract notion of theoretical physics. Since then, however, the theory presented by Max Planck has proven to be of fundamental importance in the field of quantum mechanics and what is known as the wave structure of matter related to the famous Einstein equation related to energy and mass conversion.
