Essay on Being a Cancer Survivor

Every year more than 200,000 American men are told they have prostate cancer and 50,000 of these men will die needlessly from this disease.

Prostate cancer is the male equivalent of breast cancer in women. One in five men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime. Most men are only vaguely aware of the disease, its treatment and its consequences. Unlike women, who usually talk freely among themselves about intimate health problems, such as breast cancer, most men shy away from exchanging information about any of their physical disorders, let alone problems involving the prostate gland, which could possibly affect their urinary flow, and mess up their sex life.

My story may sound different to many people but will of great interest and will be effective to all of those who would be taking up there own chances to get through this complex era of their life. This worst news came to me on July 31st 1996 when I was around an age 62 and was leading a life full of happiness and joy with my wife and children.

Diagnosis

I began to have some urinary problems back in 1992, frequent trips to the bathroom and some bladder leakage. I was referred to a Urologist and had the Cystoscopy procedure. (Cystoscopy enables the doctor to examine the lower urinary tract visually. During the procedure, a thin fiber optic instrument (a tube with a light and lenses on the end) is passed through the urinary duct (urethra) into the bladder). He diagnosed me with prostatitis. In 1992 my first PSA was 2.0. In 1993 when my Prostate-specific antigen (A PSA test measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen in the blood) went to 3.9, I had the ultrasound and was diagnosed with Benign Prostate Hypertrophy (BPH is an enlargement of the prostate that is characterized by a slowdown in the urine stream, build up of urine in the bladder, and a frequent and urgent need to urinate), a non-malignancy.
