Introduction
Henrik Ibsen is widely regarded as the father of modern prose drama and he was born in Skien, Norway, on March 20, 1828. His early life was spent in poverty because his father who was a prominent merchant went bankrupt. Ibsen spent his early life working in theatres in Bergen and what is now Oslo. His first play was written at the age of twenty one. Ibsen was criticized by his critics for stirring up sensitive social issues and in the drama "A Doll's House" which was written in prose, Ibsen presents his belief that husband and wife should live as equals, free to become their own human beings. Ibsen was attacked by his critics for failing to respect the institution of marriage in regard to the drama "A Doll's House" which represents realism (SparkNotes).
A Doll's House presents Nora Helmer and her husband Torvald Helmer on Christmas Eve at their home in the company of some of their friends. Torvald has recently been able to secure a position at a bank and the Helmer family who have had to be careful with money for a while can now live a better life. Nora and Torvald exchange pleasantries with their friends Dr. Rank and Mrs. Linde who was Nora's school friend. Mrs. Linde tells Nora that she has no occupation and feels very empty and asks if Trovald can help her secure a position at the bank (Henrik).
The gathering is joined by Krogstad who is a low level employee of the bank where Torvald works and Nora reacts uneasily to his presence. It turns out that Trovald wants to remove Krogstad from his position at the bank because of his poor reputation and hire Mrs. Linde.
