Introduction
Alice Miller was born in Poland in 1923. She was educated and lives in Switzerland. She studied philosophy, sociology, and psychology and took her doctorate in 1953. She completed her psychoanalytic training in Zurich, and as a practicing psychoanalyst she has been involved in teaching and training for more than 20 years. Ms. Miller has authored several books on child related psychiatry including "The Prisoners of Childhood", "Banished Knowledge: Facing Childhood Injuries", "The Drama of the Gifted Child" and "Paths of Life: Seven Scenarios" amongst others.
Ms. Miller has written mostly on the impact of upbringing on the personality of a child and the effects of this upbringing on the child's later adult life. In her book "The Drama of the Gifted Child", Ms. Miller examines the consequences of repression at the personal and social level and its impact on the bringing up of children. She examines the causes of the physical and psychological harm done to children and how this can be prevented. She also presents some of the new methods at the disposal of a psychologist for dealing with the consequences of infant traumas which may be sufficiently magnified to demand attention. A major part of Ms. Miller's work has been associated with child psychiatry (Diane, 2004).
Ronald D. Laing's was a noted psychiatrist whose work was centered on the understanding and treatment of schizophrenic patients with a split personality. He could perhaps best be termed an "existential psychiatrist". Mr. Laing's first book, "The Divided Self", attempts to explain schizophrenia by using existentialist philosophy to vividly portray the inner world of a schizophrenic and the work is considered to be a seminal work in the expression of the experiences of the mentally ill.
