Aristotle defined plot as the soul of tragedy, for that is how we remember and perceive the play, the language, and the characters. That is, we remember these things in the perspective of their relations to one another and this is the pattern we call "plot" and "plot structure". The word is used figuratively in literature to designate plan or scheme of events in a story. More revealing is another figurative use of the word "plot" to mean a scheme or design to attain a goal (usually an ignoble one, as in plots and conspiracies for political purposes).
Plot involves cause and effect (Anne, 2001). In speaking of plot structure, we speak in terms of rise and fall while, in speaking of the story of the plot, we speak in terms of cause and effect (Cheryl, 1998). It is the pattern we call plot that shows us what makes this or another thing happen. When, in the old expression, "the plot thickens," we mean that the forces are being brought into play which will influence the situation before us.
Plot is the order of events that ties and unties the knot of conflict. This use of plot reminds us that the word, even in its literary context, suggests contrivance and manipulation (Anne, 2001). Some critics seem to think that plot is a bad thing in itself although, without it, there would be no drama.
