Is the fictional main character of Miguel de Cervantes' novel Don Quixote, the knight-errant Don Quixote de la Mancha, authentic or is he inauthentic? Is his life a model for people to look at and use as a guide to a more authentic existence or is it an example of un-authenticity? Perhaps there is some middle ground. This question will be answered using the philosophy of Martin Heidegger. Martin Heidegger, a German philosopher who lived from 1889 until 1976, was one of the primary figures of the philosophical movement known as existentialism and is considered to be one of the greatest philosophers of the twentieth century. In his philosophy, Heidegger devoted attention to the question of how one ought to live one's life.
It is true that nearly the entire novel tells the story of Don Quixote. In fact, Quixano is only mentioned in a very few beginning and ending pages of the novel. However, the person that is always present in the story is Alonso Quixano; it is only that, for the majority of the story, Quixano is in character as Don Quixote de la Mancha, the knight-errant.
Therefore
Thesis Statement: What is a more basic question than the authenticity of Don Quixote is the authenticity of Alonso Quixano, Don Quixote's true self. I believe Don Quixote is a dreamer, not a mad man.
All the actions of Don Quixote are truly the actions of Quixano. So, when looking at the actions of Don Quixote it is important to keep in mind that Quixano has chosen to live his life as this knight. It is Alonso must be judged to be living an authentic or inauthentic existence. So the question asked earlier now becomes, is Alonso Quixano authentic? To answer this, his life as Quixano and his life as Quixote must be examined.
