Essay on The Thin Red Line
Originally adapted from the famous novel written by the renowned writer James Jones in 1962, the movie Thin Red Line records the happenings of the men of Charlie Company who were a part of the American force charged with capturing the tactically important humid island of Guadalcanal from the Japanese during the Second World War in the year1942-43.
With a few notable trimmings and adjustments in the actual story according to movie requirements, director Malick has extracted his essential events and characters in one piece from Jones's story, the disembarkation, landing, and march inland of the Company; the Company's prolonged battle to capture a hill tenaciously defended by the Japanese is the theme of the film.
The Thin Red Line, based on James Jones' 1962 autobiographical novel about the World War II battle at Guadalcanal, and has been adapted for the big screen. A 1964 film, made in black and white by director Andrew Marton, used the same source material. But Marton's version is so different from Malick's that it's almost as if they shared the title by coincidence. To call 1998's The Thin Red Line a remake is to do the movie and its creators a great injustice.
Malick's movie is a highly original piece of motion picture creativity.
1998 could easily be considered the year that movies attempted to de romanticize the World Wars. The Thin Red Line is the third film released in the last six months to look at the experience of battle as something less than the heroic struggle of a John Wayne film.
